Totally
redesigned front and rear bumper pieces gave the Corvette a striking new
look in 1980. Due to tougher emission standards, Corvettes bound for
California were fitted with 305 cubic inch engines. A new federal law
mandated speedometers with a maximum reading of only 85 mph. Another
negative were the roof panel carriers.
After
several years of weight increases, the 1980 Corvette was lighter because
of lower density roof panels, reduced thickness in hood and outer doors,
and use of aluminum for the differential housing and cross member. Air
conditioning became standard. 1980 was the last full production year
Corvettes were built in St. Louis before moving the assembly line to
Bowling Green, KY. The last L-82 is a prime
collectable, since only 5,069 were built.
